Removing a review that you got on your Google Business Profile is not that easy. Especially when the review is coming from a real user expressing their inconvenience with your services or products, or maybe other causes. But that does not mean you have no control over what people say about your business.

In this guide, we will discuss whether you can legally remove fake negative Google reviews, and how to remove reviews from your business profile that are affecting your business negatively.

Upon finding the real information about how the reviews are removed from your business, I followed all the steps on my own so you will have a real-time user experience in this guide. Let’s start by understanding what a review actually is, how it works, and its impact on a business’ growth or downfall.

I will also be discussing a few of my business’s negative reviews so you can have a real understanding of this topic. Let’s begin!

Quick Look

  • Reviews are the footprints your customers leave on your listed business. It helps others interested in your product or service decide whether to consider you or leave you.
  • Generally, a 1-star rating is considered an unsatisfactory experience, while a 5-star rating signals peak customer satisfaction.
  • If you’re looking to remove some reviews from your business, it’s not always possible until the review falls under Google’s review policy violation threshold.
  • As a store owner, you can report a review if you find it violates policy. But then Google decides what to do with it – keep or remove.
  • If the review contains false statements of fact that damage your reputation, threats, harassment, or other unlawful content, you can consider legal action.

What Counts As a Fake Negative Google Review

So before you find ways to remove fake negative reviews on your local business listing, understand how to identify the fake ones.

By that means, not every review you receive from customers falls under the “FAKE” category. Here’s how you identify the fake review:

  • A Fake review will not have a genuine firsthand experience at the business.
  • It will talk about some random political beliefs or generic commentary that doesn’t mention the business functions.
  • It contains aggressive words with no connection to the business or any existing employee.
  • Discussing random things brutally and defaming your business.

You can visit (Spinonweb) and get to know better about it.

Difference between Fake and Normal Review (Example based)

A fake review includes just normal criticising language. They follow a set pattern to comment on anybody’s business without having in-depth details.

For example, “The service was bad.” “Unsatisfactory.” “Not Good.”

These are generic comments that do not define exactly what is causing the problem for customers.

On the other hand, a normal review is when someone describes in detail how their experience was with your service, product, or company; it looks more authentic and has a strong chance of affecting the business (positively or negatively).

If I take an example from my business about a negative review (a normal negative review), it might look like this:

spinonweb

In this comment, the user gave us a 3-star rating, mentioning, “Too far from metro station.”

I mean, that might be true for this person – because he lives far away from the main zone of the city.

This review looks real and therefore comes under a normal review category.

Here’s a quick view on which reviews are likely/unlikely to be removed by Google.

Type of Review Likely Removed by Google?
Fake review from a non-customer Yes
Competitor-posted review Yes
Bot or spam-generated review Yes
Offensive language or profanity Yes
Hate speech or harassment Yes
Impersonation of another person Yes
Review containing personal information Yes
Review with explicit illegal content Yes
Genuine bad experience, honestly described No
One-star with no text (but from a real customer) Usually No
Harsh but truthful poor-service complaint No

Can you legally remove fake Google reviews?

After understanding reviews and their importance, the question comes to your mind whether you can successfully remove any negative comment from your online business?

The answer is: Yes, you may get fake Google reviews removed if they violate Google’s review policy. But have zero control over normal comments.

Google’s review policy does not allow business owners to remove any review they find negative on their business posted by a real user as his/her own experience.

Reviews are essential factors for Google in deciding whether a business is worth recommending to customers when they search for related terms.

However, if a review violates Google’s Terms of Service or local laws, it may be removed as soon as it is confirmed by officials.

As per Google’s review removal policy, any comments that have:

  • Spam and fake engagement.
  • Conflict of interest.
  • Harassment or hate speech.
  • Off-topic content.
  • Personal information.
  • Impersonation.

Are likely to be removed.

In India, Google usually removes reviews only if they break policy, or when it receives a valid legal request or court order. If a review is false and harms your reputation, the reviewer can also face legal action.

How to Report a Fake Review on Google

It’s time to report a fake review on your business online. I will show you practically how you perform each step.

Step 1: Search for business

Initially, search for your business, product, or service you’re ranking for. In my case: Spinonweb is the search term.

Step 2: Navigate the review section

After that, go to the ‘Reviews’ section of your Google Business Profile. A list of reviews will open.

Step 3: Identify a particular review

Among these comments, select the one that seems to be fake and should be removed. So, I selected one that commented, “Too far from metro station.” And tap the ‘three dots’ icon beside it.

[Disclaimer: The particular review I am referring to here does not fall under the “Fake” category. It is used to help you understand the process only.]

Step 4: Locate “Review Report” option.

Once I clicked the three-dot icon, a “Review Report” option popped up. After consecutive clicks on that, a new page opens up with a variety of issues to select from.

Step 5: Select the best-fit reason & submit

After selecting one of the reasons you find is relevant for reporting a comment, for example, I chose “not helpful”, then click the submit button.

Step 6: Track your report status

After you report the particular comment, you can track its status in the Reports section on the Google Maps application.

Taking Legal Action Against the Reviewer

Google has a legal help section where business owners can submit legal requests about content shown on Google products. The steps are given below:

Step 1: Once you click the three dots (beside the comments which we discussed above), you will have a list of queries to choose from. But at the very bottom, an option is highlighted as: Report a Legal Issue.

Step 2: As you tap ‘Report a legal issue’ option, Google product(s) where the comment appeared.

In my case, I have selected Google Maps and related products:

Step 3: Keep selecting the options as per your case until you find the “submit” option.

After submitting a legal issue, you can wait for a few weeks to get a response. Until then, keep checking the status on the Reviews Management Tool.

Note: Legal responsibility usually lies with the person who posted the review, not Google. In India, platforms like Google get limited protection under Section 79 of the IT Act if they follow the rules, so they generally remove reviews only after a policy check or when given a valid legal notice or court order. If a review contains a false factual claim that harms your reputation, the reviewer can be pursued under IPC Sections 499/500 or in a civil suit, and you may ask a court to order removal after preserving evidence.

What Happens After You Report (Realistic Timelines & Outcomes

After submitting a report against a fake review on Google Business Profile, Google decides when to address the issue. In the process, it may take a few days or even weeks. You can check the status by visiting Google Maps’ dashboard or on GBP. Based on its review policies, Google evaluates whether the content should be removed.

However, if the review does not seem to be violating policies, Google may not take any action, and it remains on your business as it is.

What Does a Review Do to a Business

When someone comments on your business – in favour of or against – this signals to search engines how people perceive your business online. Based on that, Google considers whether to suggest your business to a targeted audience or not.

That goes similarly for the user’s perspective as well.

If someone searches for a product related to your business and finds your business listing on Google, the first thing they notice is the review part. If unsatisfactory, they have a better chance of leaving the business – you’re likely losing a customer.

In simple words, reviews are your business’ credibility on the internet. Your potential customers look for the reviews (what others are saying about your business) and then decide to continue with or leave forever.

By now, you have an idea about how important someone’s feedback is on your Google Business Profile. It can support or ruin your business completely.

Final Take!

The most important thing to understand before taking any action is this: Google removal and legal removal are two separate processes with two separate standards.

Google asks: Does this review break our content policies?
The law asks: Does this review contain a false statement of fact that caused provable harm?

A review can fail both tests and still stay live. A review can also pass one test but not the other. The only reviews that can ever be removed are those that violate Google’s policies — you cannot pay to remove Google reviews, and Google will not act simply because a review feels unfair.

For most small businesses, the right starting point is always Google’s policy reporting process — not a lawyer’s office. Legal options exist, but they are slower, more expensive, and only appropriate in specific circumstances.

Note: This guide refers to Google’s policies and the legal framework applicable in India; procedures and remedies can differ in other countries.
